As mandated by the Act, the NHBRC has a duty to regulate the home building industry. We have taken stock of and embrace the vision of the National Department of Human Settlements to create integrated sustainable communities where people can live, stay and pray. As a builder you have a valuable part to play in the creation of this vision.

In terms of Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act 09 of 1998, any person in the business of home building must register with the NHBRC. Evaluation of registration is based on technical, construction and financial capabilities.
The benefits to registration are:
•    Compliance to Act
•    Recognition by financial institutions as an accredited home builder
•    Access to NHBRC mediation services
•    Access to NHBRC training and other building resources

The following is a summary of the home builder obligations
•    Register with the NHBRC and renew membership annually
•    Enter into a written agreement with your client before construction commences
•    Make sure your enrol the home at least fifteen days prior to construction begins
•    Ensure the home is constructed in accordance with the NHBRC’s technical requirements and the terms,
      plans and specifications of the written agreement
•    Rectify non-compliance with terms, plans and specifications or any deficiency related to design, workmanship
     or materials as notified by the housing consumer within a period of three months from date of occupation
•    Repair roof leaks attributable to workmanship, design or materials as notified by the housing consumer which
     occurs within a period of twelve months from date of occupation
•    Rectify major structural defects as notified by the housing consumer which manifests within a period of five years
     from date of occupation
